I have an outstanding Arsenal AK that groups 2-3 inches at 100 yards, even with cheap ammo. I am interested in putting a scope on it, as my eyes are aging a bit. I've determined I want something more than 4X and I want it to be variable power. I like simple reticles and don't like a lot of the "tactical" reticles I've seen.

Please offer your input on quality optics under $400. Many thanks.

Check out the falcon s8i 1-8x24. Seems to check all the boxes. I have one on my ar and like it. Only complaint is the illumination is a little is a little too bright.

This sorta depends on what you mean by a "simple reticle".

Most low range variables out there, like the the excellent Burris RT-6 1-6x24 have reticles designed with the 5.56x45 in mind, so they are not optimal for your 7.62x39 (presumably) AK.  If yours is a 5.45x39 version, the RT-6 might work well.

Honestly, I like smallish scopes on AKs, so looking at different hunting scopes out there, I see Leupold VX-3i 1.5-5x20 which is a pretty decent little scope for right around $400.

Another option along the same lines is the non-illuminated Minox ZX5 1-5x24, although it is a little more expensive.

If you are OK with a larger scope, Hawke Endurance 1.5-6x42 is a pretty decent scope that also comes with a simple duplex reticle, but it is a little bulkier than I would want on an AK.  I do not think the side-mount lends itself well to larger scopes.

If you are comfortable with 2.5x on the low end, SWFA makes an excellent ultra light 2.5-10x32 with a duplex reticle.  I have a couple of these and I am quite happy with them.

I know you said you wanted more than 4x, but suggest you just consider this option:

Really nice little scope.

I like the one Kickboxer posted but to give you some options I think a 2-7 power scope might be a good choice for you.  I have a couple of the Redfield 2-7 scopes and like them.  If you are not planning on using a complex reticle to hold over then pick the reticle you like. The redfield and the Leupold 2-7 can both be had with a simple plex type reticle. With ballistic reticles you only use them at the maximum power of the scope unless it is first focal plane (reticle appears to change size when you increase power).

I have the Nikon 2-7... great choice.  Good glass, clear, rapid acquisition.

I have always used the SWFA 6X and SWFA Classic 4x. I have several of each.
A year ago I bought my 1st AK. Thinking it was junk exactly what my drill sgt told me in 1989, I wasn't thinking much of the rig.
I always buy the items poo pooed by the "EXPERTS". This is how I came to the SS in 1997.
So I bought the Century C39v2 right after MAC and AKOU did their video on it.
Thinking it was junk I didn't feel it was worthy on an SS optic. Robski at AKOU suggests his mount and optic combo. The mount is an RS Resolute and the optic is a Primary Arms 3x or 1-6x.
They both have the ACSS reticle. Boy was I wrong. This rig is badass. I am at 1000 rds now. No issues or odd wear. I can own EVERYTHING  out to and including 500 yards with that awesome 3x optic. I am now getting the 1-6x for my next rifle. Check out Robs videos on youtube. This rig rocks!

Also. That RS Resolute mount Is outstanding!. I have ADM on all my ARs. But.... if RS made AR type mounts, ADM, Larue and others would have some serious competition.
Guys ask me how it returns to zero.
My rifle is exactly 6 months newer than my sons (same exact make/model). He regularly hijacks my optic for his rifle. It serves both rifles without any zero changes. I'd say, that's a testament to the mount, but something has to be said about the rifle mfg's QC and tolerences. So now I'm fixing to hand off the 3x and get a 1-6x.
Keeping in mind, I shoot Walmart Tulammo, the ACSS reticle is dead on. The only thing I haven't tested yet is the moving target leads on the reticle.
Check out the video. If it weren't for the 7.62x39 designed ACSS reticle, I'd have an SS on it. I have extras in waiting. But Primary Arms really knocked it outta the park with these. They do what they say they do.

I have an Arsenal AK, I just shifted optics around and it ended up with a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on it. I sold the 4x24 PSOP scope that I had with it because when attached, it would not let the side folding stock lay flat. I have the scope  mount that replaces the gas tube (Ulti-Mak?) and with the little Bushnell, it co-witnesses. Yeah, those Arsenals are above average in accuracy, iron sights were fine for about 3-4" groups at 100, maybe this red dot will do better...
