All shots will be less than 200 yards, however, I want a 3-9 anyway.  I realize I could get by with less magnification but I like the extra power in case I need to quickly judge a rack and for any target work I do.  I generally set the scope up and leave it so I'm not too concerned with tracking.  Really just want a durable and bright scope.  It's going on a 20 gauge savage 220 slug gun so a BDC reticle of some sort would be nice but not required.  Also, I would like the body of the scope to be at least 5" from bell to eyepiece to allow me to mount it to the longer action on this gun without using extension rings.  What would you suggest in the $150 - $350 (absolute max) range?

The Burris E1 3-9x40 looks like a pretty good choice but I'm a little concerned about the eye-relief going from 3.1" all the way up to almost 4".  I imagine that it would be hard to get a consistent sight picture based on the varied eye relief.  Is that a valid concern about this scope or not that big a deal?  Also, when is the eye relief at its max, at 3x or 9x?

I do not want to step up to the VX3 or Zeiss Conquest, anything at or over $400 is just a bit out of my price range.

Thanks,
Mike

+1 on the Bushnell. Mainly due to the rainguard coating.

Same scope. I have one of each, not a noticeable difference between them. Its filled with Argon instead of Nitrogen for whatever that's worth. Fantastic scope in my opinion. Mine are on a pair of 270 win's and I am quite fond of them.

Eye relief will be longest and the "eye box" most forgiving at the low end of the mag range...

I have a handful of vipers (only one left in 3-9x40) and would agree with the above statement HOWEVER....the current line of vipers does not include a 3-9x40 with any other reticle than the BDC....deal breaker for me.

I am an idiot I committed about a viper on my AR when it is a diamondback!! (vortex)
Either way great scope. I would say equal to my new model nikon prostaff. The scope is very compact and resembles most 2-7 rang scopes. You mentioned above that you want a longer scope so this may not be the scope for you.

Really tough to be the Bushnell for your intended purpose. Proven reliability on heavy kickers, great optics and rainguard to boot all within your budget!

The Bushnell is a good scope.  I also like the Burris FFII
