I bought a leupold VX3i 1.5-5x20 for a Tikki t3 I’m assuming I need low rings ? STD rings and mounts.

Low rings will work.  You might actually prefer mediums depending on your head position.  I'd definitely start with lows though.

It is not mandatory that you use low rings....you could mount it up in the sky if you wanted to....

Picatinny mounts allow some latitude for adjusting eye relief to the shooter without entirely remounting the scope. 

If the youngster wears eyeglasses, a mount higher than low may be desirable so that they can look through closer to the optical center of the eyeglass lens.
