Dropped from one of these boys as well Big Grin I flew on the H model "slicks" during my time as a loadmaster, but cool to see the MC-130 and 130 in general getting a little limelight. If you want to read up on some history, the C-130 is one hellova aircraft with a long history of aviation and combat use.

And yeah, use more of the damn things. They're really only practical for a few types of missions but definitely have a purpose. The psychological factor alone is worth dropping a few on the nut jobs.

Should have dropped a tandem. Another one in the same hole 3 minutes apart. Make sure they get the deeper bunkers...............

I don't believe they are used for penetration, they explode above ground and the blast is concussion oriented.

It'll leave a massive crater. It's GPS guided and falls at a much slower rate than say an advanced bunker buster and is not meant to penetrate into the ground but due to the sheer power, will absolutely level anything below ground to a decent depth and the blast radius above ground is very wide. Locals over a mile away said they thought a bomb went off directly in front of their houses.

Back in Vietnam, they used similar type MAOB's to create LZ's.

I remember the MOABs from the Vietnam era. Watching the videos of the going off was impressive. They were propane based, and like shooter said, they did a good job of creating LZs in the jungle.

I did wonder why they didn't use the thermite bombs that were developed at the beginning of the Afgan war just for caves.

During WWII there was an English bomb designer that designed bombs for a lot of special missions and targets for everything from dam busting to destroying entire city blocks with single bombs, and penetrating sub pens on the French coast. One bomb that he designed was called an earth quake bomb. It weighed 10 tons, and was designed for deep penetration of the earth. It was dropped by a Lancaster bomber that had been modified to carry the massive bomb. It was dropped on a German railway bridge that had proved to be impossible to knock out with conventional bombs. The bomb landed next to the bridge and the blast shook the ground so hard that it took the whole bridge down.
This made me wonder why they haven't modified a B52 or B1 to deliver the MOAB. That would scare the hell out of N. Korea and Iran.

My understanding is that the MOAB has dual lethality:  1) concussive effect; and 2) it creates an oxygen vacuum in the blast radius that literally sucks the air out of your lungs.

...and supposedly they new where to drop the bomb because we funded building the complex. Yeah. The only way to defeat those people is to do what defeated them last time. Last time it was the Industrial Revolution moving the West far ahead, leaving them economically irrelevant. If we advance technologically to the point fossil fuels are obsolete, there will be no more trouble from a poor Middle East.

I know that's not going to be a popular assessment around here. It is however more accurate than thinking another dog and pony drop the bomb regime change show will accomplish anything other than creating more opportunities to build and drop bombs. I'm just a regular fella who won't profit from creating conflict. Rather, I will suffer from erosion of my freedom over some nonsensical government expansion to counteract a practically nonexistent terrorist threat.

If you want to defeat ISIS stop giving them money. If you want to stop giving them money stop supporting the political elite who profit from continual conflict.

It is an aerial detonation and the shock is off the charts. A second hit in the crater of the first would have destabilized the system beyond repair. Seems like there may be some bet hedging toward future events.
