Let's not be subtle, go with an auto 50 cal and an Alpha scope....  I hear where ever there are wolves the Elk and big game have paid a steep price.  The wolves are as bad as undisciplined man,  killing more than they can ever eat.  I truly don't understand why they repopulated the wolves...  Coyotes yes, that was done by Insurance Companies in self interest, in attempts to reduce animal and vehicle interactions...

Yes I agree that the 6.5x55 Swede is a well kept secret, and I have seen an old friend out shoot 308 sniper rifles with a 6.5 Swedish Mauser. The advantage of the 6.5 Creed over the Swede is the shorter cartridge that can fit in many 308 based actions, including some semi-auto actions. A good supply of 6.5 Swede at a good price would be nice too.
Hmmm, a 1917A1, or 1918 Vickers in 6.5 Swede would be really interesting.

What is it with some people and .308W action lengths? ;)

Interesting you mention 1917. I really fancy a pairing of an M1917 in .30-06 (A Winchester maybe) and a S&W 1917 in .45ACP / Auto rim

You must be talking about the Pattern 1917 Enfield that supplemented the 1903 Springfield during WWI.
I'm talking about the 1917 Browning machine gun.

I realised BF, just noting how The Dough Boys carried a lot of things with the year designation 1917 in them!

Hey, you Brits contracted with Winchester to build the P14 in .303 and we liked it so much that when the Government arsenals couldn't make enough 1903 Springfields to supply our troops, they had the P14 rechambered to 30 06 and called it the P17. There were more P17s carried by U.S. troops than 1903 Springfields.
The P17 is on my wish list.

If licensing was less of a pain here I might well have a P17. I'm not sure why there is a nostalgia for Lee Enfields or the .303 in a bolt action -  I just don't see the attraction.

Now, if someone would make a light, handy single shot in .303 Brit...

My dad had one. Straight military. Weighed 50 lbs.

He once shot two whitetails ( running! ) out of a bunch of five bounding deer, out in our back pasture on the farm in Pennsylvania....peep sights, of course! Four shots----two deer....it was Doe Season....there were five of us in the group!

Hey Scrummy, you could get a P14 which is .303Wink

I'm not sure why there is a nostalgia for Lee Enfields or the .303 in a bolt action -  I just don't see the attraction.

The attraction is that the Lee Enfield was supposed to be the best battle rifle of WWI. When you compare it against the G98 Mauser and the 1903 Springfield, it was the better rifle for trench warfare. Of course that 10 round magazine and fast to work bolt action was a big plus over it's 2 main competitors.
The Lee Enfield would be great to have against an attacking horde of wolves or coyotesWink

I think lots of manufactures have missed a trick with some of the old rimmed cartridges. Both Bergara and Henry make single shot rifles but they tend to be in things like .223 rem .243 and .308W.

Why they don't make single shot rifles in .303Brit, 7.62x54r for the Prvi / former com bloc makers of those rounds? Or in the great European chamberings 5.6x57r, 6.5x57r, 7x57r, 8x57r, 9.3x74r? Bergara is a Spanish maker...

A guy posted on a UK hunting forum posted saying his Bergara in .308W that a casing had stuck so hard it had to go back to a gunsmith...

Why do they bother with rimless rounds in break actions? Just boggles my mind...

Forgot to add, 7x65r!

I picked up a M95 Styer in 8x56R for my small straight pull collection. I thought about getting another one and change it over to a rimless cartridge, drop it in a different stock, and top it with a long eye relief scope for a brush rifle, but after shooting the 8x56R I think it's fine the way it is.
