I am looking at buying either a Zeiss Classic 6x42mm or  the Schmidt & Bender 6x42 riflescope. I am in the small minority that prefers a fixed power scope, regardless of the advantages a variable scope has. My impression is that the Zeiss has slightly better lens and that the S&B is more rugged. I assume the Zeiss 6x42 is still made in Germany?.  I have owned Zeiss products in the past and been happy with them. I do find it rather curious that the S&B scope is higher priced.  Any comments?

pick one and you will be happy - they are both excellent quality lens and construction.

you MAY want to look into KAHLES or IOR if you wanted to save a nickel or two for a 6x42.

what are you putting it on?

i, too, love fixed power scopes - i have a 4x40 and a 7x56 and am very pleased w/ both.

welcome to the OT.

Zeiss and S&B are much different companies. Zeiss has many divisions and am positive buys many magnitudes more in materials and has more control on all aspects of manufacture in house. S&B in comparison is a boutique and needs to charge more for overhead and I am sure not everything they do is under their roof. Also don’t forget with exchange rates and being located in a Socialist Utopia doesn’t help matters.

Anyway back to your question:

I own both S&B and Zeiss Scopes. (Including the new Zeiss Lotutec – Diavari) I can tell you that you will be very happy with either manufacture.

1. The S&B and Zeiss are both constructed and function flawless. Both will track bullets across a target exactly to the measurements on the turret / scope and the mm / inch on the target. (Accurate rifle helps...)

2. I cannot tell a difference when it comes to deviation of shadow detail in either manufacture. (Comparing 50mm to 50mm)

3. Interesting though between a new 50mm Zeiss Diavari – Lotutec and a 50mm S&B PMII (At similar magnification) the Zeiss resolution is noticeable greater. (With no difference in detectable brightness in shadows)

Again I think you will be happy with either… though if things are equal and the price less; buy the Zeiss…
