I have a rem 700 pss in 308 with a swfa SS 3-15x42 on it.  The swfa SS 3-15x42 was recomended on here so I thought I would go ahead and ask about an upgrade.  I am wanting to increase the magnification a little and hopefully the overall quality of the glass.  This is strictly for target shooting out to 1000 yds.  I am thinking about the 3 following scopes.  Trying to keep it under $1k.

SWFA SS HD 5-20x50 - $900 on samplelist
Vortex Viper Gen II PST 5-25x50 - $750 on samplelist
Sightron SIII 6-24x50 - $800 on samplelist

Which is the best overall and is there anything else out there worth considering in the same price range?

Jim, I'm not sure how I missed this originally, but can offer a little info.

I have time behind the scopes mentioned except for the Gen2 PST.

On the SWFA 5-20, you will get better glass (to my eyes, at least), better turret feel and design, and more top end magnification. For the money, it is a good scope, and SWFA stands behind their stuff, which I appreciate immensely. It has plenty of elevation for your purposes.

On the Sightron, I did a review on that model several years ago and liked it. I didn't use it enough to torture-test it, but I liked the glass, turrets were okay - they traked true, and I don't recall the total elevation travel, which will be important for your purposes.

On the Trijicon, I hated mine. The glass was okay, the reticle (green center dot on a mil dot reticle) was huge, the elevation travel was very limited, and the turrets felt like a Wal Mart scope. I used mine for low light hunting on a few trips, and immediately sold it thereafter. It did nothing exceedingly well.

Were it my money, I'd probably do the SWFA, if only because I know they will honor the warranty. Sometimes buying used causes problems, I know Trijicon will be an ass about it if they can (voice of experience.)

For the money, the SWFA 3-15 is a good scope. Bumping up to $1k will get you some improvement with many scopes (the 5-20 SWFA being one) but don't expect a world of difference.

I own a 5-20, and a 3-15 SS. The 5-20 is a definite step up from the 3-15 in every category. Never had an issue with either though. For my use, the 5-20 always stays on my primary rifle. The 3-15 is a floater, that spends most of its time on my bolt action 22 or as a loaner scope to friends having issues. My sons 308s also wear 3-15s. (I guess you could call me a fan!)
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?
