Just purchased a Leupold VX5HD 3-15x56 from competitor and after looking the scope over I notice a small o ring protruding from under the windage dial cap. Is this an issue I should be concerned about? I’m guessing I can’t post pics of it on here. It doesn’t look like an integral part of the scope, but it annoys me that I paid over a grand for it and this is what I find.

I guess i’d call the competitor if I was you.

Pardon my bad manners, welcome to the OT.

If you're talking about the rubber gasket that seals the windage cap, every one of these scopes that I've looked and and the one I've owned have this issue. Over tighten, or even just tighten the windage cap and the gasket bulges out the side, leaving a gap where water can enter too.

It's a definite pet peeve, and unacceptably sloppy in my opinion, and one of the reasons I no longer have my VX-5.

That said, unless I misinderstood you amd there's an internal O-ring protruding in some way, it's not really a big deal and could be solved by simply buyimg a better gasket.
To me it was indicative of the overall build quality, which pales in comparison the the Leica scopes I own.

It’s the o ring under the dial cap. Doesn’t appear to serve much of a purpose.

Wow, I wish I could edit for typos.

Yeah, the gasket is presumably to seal the wiindage turret for moisture and is an easily replaceable part, it's just annoying that it's so poorly fitted and bulges out when tightened.

It's the kind of thing you pay top dollar for on the Euro scopes though I suppose, whether better build quality and attentiom to detail is worth the $$ is a decision you have to make when you decide on a new scope.

I have a couple with those.  IIRC its a flat gasket not a o-ring gasket.  I believe it is supposed to smash down like that to make the seal, where the o-ring type would hide under the cap.

Yes, it's a flat rubber washer, but it bulges out from under the cap when even moderately tightened.

The VX-3i I had didn't have the problem because the caps are much smaller in diameter and the washer fits better.

Just one of those things that screams "cheap" which you shouldn't get for $1,000 in my opinion.

MyAllegory and Sakoshooter,
The OT forum settings are configured so that new members must first log 50 posts before editing capability (post edits and uploading photos into posts) is activated. Stick around, and you will soon see those menu functions appear. Until then, if you need to post any photos or edit something, feel free to shoot me or another moderator a PM and we'll be happy to help you out.

Welcome to the OT, and we appreciate you joining us!

As for the o-ring/gasket bulging thing, I've seen that with several different makes/models of scopes. Though it looks unsightly, it's nothing to really be concerned about from a functional standpoint. Still, I do understand when you pay a lot for a scope, you expect the little details to be perfect.
